Gina and Jody Brewer went to theDuPreHouse in Georgetown, SC for us.  They got a personal tour of the town from Inn Keeper Karen Komar while Chef Hubbie Sam Murphy stayed at home to make it warm and cozy.  Here is what they have to say!

Let us dust off the American History book and take a stroll through the early chapters.  Prior to the American Revolution, the deep southern colonies of Sam MurphySouth Carolina were overflowing with prestige and wealth.  The prominent seaport of Georgetown was home to many large rice and indigo plantations.  British troops managed to take control of the town and blockade access to the port until men like Frances “Swamp Fox” Marion succeeded in running them off.
Today, Georgetown’s vast historic district, whose streets are lined with stately Live Oak trees, boasts beautifully renovated homes and mansions that remain as evidence of its colonial grandeur.  Built in 1740 and rumored to have housed revolutionary war soldiers, the DuPre House Bed and Breakfast Inn survives to connect us with a piece of American History.

While talking with Karen Komar and Sam Murphy about the history of their home, we immediately realized that the Innkeepers have an expert knowledge of the past as it relates to both Georgetown and the inn itself.  Karen and Sam have an extensive background of education on colonial America and even own custom fit clothing specific to the time.  Furthermore, the DuPre House is beautifully decorated and accessorized in the styles common during colonial days.

Each of the five guest rooms are named after notable cities or figures from the Bed colonial south.  The Georgetown, Beaufort and Charleston rooms are named in honor of cities in South Carolina.  The Marion Room is named after ol’ “Swamp Fox” Marion himself and the Williamsburg Room is named in honor of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for whom Sam used to work.  The two second floor roomfireplaces each have access to a splendid veranda overlooking a beautiful garden and fountain.  Three rooms offer large gas fireplaces, while WiFi and tv/dvd combos are available throughout the Inn.  And just in case that was not enough for you, guests are also welcomed to take advantage of the large swimming pool, heated spa and well-equipped fitness center.

After a refreshing night of sleep, we were treated to Sam’s amazing gourmet breakfast – appropriately served on Blue Willow china.  The mouth-watering creations not only looked picture perfect, but they left us overwhelmingly impressed and satisfiedbreakfast for the rest of the day.  His rule is “no one leaves hungry” and he is true to this rule with the delectable fare each morning.  Every breakfast began with a creative serving of fresh fruit accompanied by a strong cup of private blend coffee or juice.  Then we were served blueberry French Toast Souffle with center cut bacon one morning followed by spinach and bacon crust less quiche and potatoes the next.  Meeting Sam wearing his chef’s coat is a good indication of his talents in the kitchen.  We sat for over an hour each morning enjoying the meal and the conversation with our auspicious innkeepers.
Equally as enticing were the inn’s gardens that Karen herself has so lovingly laid out and manicured.  Previous guests have labeledfountain them as an “oasis of relaxation.”  From the gentle sounds of water fountains to the beautiful spring blooming shrubbery and roses accompanied by soft classical music playing in the background, guests can be easily swept away from routine and enjoy the peace and tranquility of a bygone era.
While visiting the DuPre House, guests are encouraged to enjoy walking the in the historical district and the Grand Strand, enjoying shopping in downtown along Front Street, strolling along the Harbor Walk or visiting the eclectic museums throughout town.  The Georgetown County Museum houses a large array of local relics and original historical documents including a preserved letter from Frances Marion himself.  Other museums in the area include the Clock Tower and the Kaminski House.  Although Georgetown is conveniently located between the tourist beaches of Charleston and Myrtle Beach, it is adjacent to the quieter and non-commercialized beach of Pawley’s Island, South Carolina.

After freshening-up from the day’s events, guests of the DuPre House Bed and Breakfast are invited to mingle each evening over light hors d’oeuvres and wine prior to venturing upon the town for dinner at local restaurants.  Sam and Karen kindly made recommendations as to some local places to eat.  Gratefully, they arranged reservations for us at the reputable Rice Paddy which holds claim to being one of the top restaurants in the state of South Carolina.  Popular for its rack of lamb and seafood fares, receptionthis upscale dining atmosphere created a spectacular romantic evening.  For a much more relaxing dinner evening, Sam and Karen guided us to Revolve where owner DeWayne Beaty immediately welcomed us and created a truly enjoyable experience.  It was a blessing to have recommendations for local establishments that really deserved the business and take care of their customers.
I hope it is obvious that we enjoyed being guests at the DuPre House Bed and Breakfast Inn in Georgetown, SC.  As with all guests, we were pampered with attention and amenities be-fitting royalty.  Anyone interested in visiting South Carolina should definitely make Georgetown one of your stops.  And contact Karen Komar and Sam Murphy of the DuPre House Bed and Breakfast for a South Carolina experience filled with history in the present to make your future memories shine.
